SIR GEOFF HURST’S hat-trick against West Germany in the 1966 World Cup final remains England’s proudest football memory.
But it has now emerged the legendary striker could have been playing for the other side!
Sir Geoff Hurst, responsible for England’s greatest achievement, shows how it might have been as he delves into his German family connections
Hurst, 76, said: “Many, many years ago I heard from my grandparents on my mother’s side that there was some connection with a German family called Blick.
“I first recall learning about that when I was really young.
“That name Blick has stuck in my mind, so I’m fascinated to see any research that can justify my thoughts.”
The 49-cap hero says he long suspected having German heritage on his mother’s side.
Maybe Sir Geoff Hurst could have been a hat-trick herr-o – rather than sinking West Germany with a treble that won the World Cup final for England in 1966PA:Press Association
Skipper Bobby Moore famously lifted the World Cup but presumably never knew the German connections of England’s main man that day, striker Geoff HurstPA:Press Association
And he is now set to have a DNA test with family history experts Ancestry — that should reveal just how close Sir Geoff was to being known by his German equivalent, Gottfried Hürst!
He added: “It’s not something I made public because I’m not sure it would have gone down too well in this country!

“But I’m pleased to let you know for the programme that the family name of Blick is there, way down on my mother’s side.”
Sir Geoff, who famously netted three against Franz Beckenbauer and Co 52 years ago, should find out the results next week.
The process, which includes having a saliva test, is being conducted by EFL sponsors Sky Bet.
